Every year our elementary school studies a different country -- the culture, geography, biodiversity and economics. This culminates in transforming the school into that country at the end of the year and all the students get to "travel" there. This year it was Equador and Sarah created the blue footed boobie for the Galapagos portion.
Oma was in town and Uncle Dave and Timothy came out for one of Sarah's soccer games.
There's an emotional difference between your kid getting her license and her actually driving away by herself for the first time.
S'mores by the chiminea!
Luna must've read that it's safest for dogs to stay rear-facing as long as possible to maximize safety.
Annika's last middle school orchestra concert at Longmont High.
She got the leadership award from her peers for "always putting the group first, being a positive example, and taking charge when necessary."
Annika and her friends handing over the torch at the NJHS induction ceremony for the rising 8th graders.
She wanted to be an officer this year in part so she could give a speech at the induction ceremony, which is exactly the reason I would not have wanted to be an officer at her age.
Luna's becoming lazy and snuggly in her old age.
The Happy Smackah is a 5K organized by the school district to raise money to take care of one of its own who is facing a significant medical hurdle. This year the recipient was a first year teacher at Longmont High who was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer at age 25.
Naomi and her friends ran into one of their favorite middle school teachers at the event.
May brought the end of the regular season for Annika's team. It was an emotional month for lots of them. And me.
Luna finally got to experience the sidelines.
Mother's Day with the ones that make me a mom.
Annika's last Pops Orchestra concert of the year. The lasts kill me.
Sarah's last regular game of the season.
Annika and her friends at Elitch's amusement park. This is an eight grade tradition for kids who have been in the music program for all three years of middle school.
With her buddy Ava.
Sarah played in two tournaments at the end of May.
Half of the fun of tournaments is killing time with friends between games.
They had a good showing and came in second.
End of May also brings the final ballet recital, a combination of ballet variations, student choreographed contemporary pieces...
...and super fun Bollywood dancing
They spend so much time together -- it's hard to say goodbye to the seniors.
...like Jackson who was such a great friend to Naomi over the years and choreographed one of my favorite senior pieces of all time.
At least Lily's not going anywhere any time soon.
Weirder than your kid driving off without you? Driving off with her sister in shotgun.
With all the May activities, I don't make it to see Clifton run competitively much any more. He came home from this one and told me he did "pretty good."🙄
With ballet over for the season, Naomi decided to cut her hair
The after pic in her new ridiculous go to pose.
Last day of school! She ends a day earlier because of her ballet schedule.
Annika's second to last day of 8th grade, spent with her friends at the lake.
Sarah's second to last day...
...which was also the day of her fifth grade continuation ceremony.
We are three for three on our kids crying through their ceremony. Lots of big feelings.
Pointing to her legacy tile.
With the Hays.
Mrs. Collier has been principal for 13 years of Railsbacks.
Just to rip the bandaid off all at once, that same day Annika had her 8th grade slideshow.
After the slideshow, the parents leave and the kids party.
And also have big sad tearful goodbye group hugs.
Kindergarten and 8th grade graduations
Last day of school for these two
Last day at the bus stop.
First days...
...and 2024
Some of the fifth graders at the end of year picnic.
Signing out.
For the past two years Naomi and her friends went camping on the last day of school
They jump off of rocks into ice cold lakes...
...and eat treats...and make plans for the summer that awaits them!
Sarah was back at the soccer field on the last night of school for her second tournament. These girls kicked so much butt. For their final game, they played down a player with zero subs against a team with six subs and were in the lead until ten minutes left in the game.
Annika's team had a good run too.
These girls are as good of friends off the field as they are on the field.
Annika had a sweet assist to Ali's beautiful goal this night!
Cousins got to watch some of each other's games this weekend which was fun.
Last goodbyes for these girls who have had an amazing several years together and are going different ways in the fall.
It's been a fun ride.
And now summer begins -- time to work on getting rid of the soccer tans!
