March 2026

This blog is so long (sorry!) -- spring sports are starting so get ready for lots of soccer and track pics from Annika! Sarah's will come next month! :)

High school soccer season underway!! While Naomi was a pretty elite soccer player at age 7 for that couple months she played and had to be convinced to go on the field, here she is just showing sisterly support and school spirit. :)

Annika's playing defensive midfield this spring, and is always looking for a good header...

She loves to celebrate her team mates' goals with them!

With her friends Luna and Mya after the game.

3/3/26 -- spending our 19th anniversary watching one of our kids do the thing she loves feels like a really great way to celebrate our years together

When she's not doing soccer, you'll find Annika at track meets. She runs the 4x400, 4x800, 800, 1600 or 3200, depending on order of events and what time she can get to the meet.

And then cram in a little symphonic orchestra concert...

The college admissions are coming in, and Naomi was thrilled to be admitted to UNC Chapel Hill (despite the deep Duke roots in the Hartemink family).

For spring break we flew to San Diego. At the airport at 1am we learned that having a reservation for a rental car does not mean you have a car.

We eventually made it to this somewhat sketchy hotel, slept a couple hours, got groceries for the upcoming week....

...and drove to this amazing little beach house in Playa la Mision, Mexico!

There was a private beach, and we spent our days just soaking in the sun (Sarah and Annika in the distance in this photo)...

...playing in the sand...

...laying out...

...and jumping in the ocean....

Fires on the beach

Day 2

When day one ends like this...

...Day 2 sunbathing looks like this... Not laying out was not an option.

Naomi is that tiny thing laying out there on the beach.

Walking to the tide pools

This girl turned 18 on a beach in Mexico!!

The only time we left our home was to go to Puerto Nuevo one evening...

...for a lobster dinner

and some octopus...

Sunset that night

Wrapping up birthday with a birthday cake!

Day 4, Naomi strolling the beach.

Sunrise, day 5.

Heading back to California.

And if you follow google maps, you'll be directed to the shortest route to San Diego, which is the global entry lane, but you cannot use the global entry lanes unless you have global entry, but by the time you realize you're in the global entry lane, it's too late. So you'll be directed to follow the nice Army officers for a more detailed search of your car, and then they will tell you that this is a warning, but if you do it three times in five years you will pay a five thousand dollar fine.

Old Town San Diego

The boardwalk at Mission Beach

This roller coaster was built in 1925 and named a National Historic Landmark in 1987.

Whale watching expedition

On the boat

Whales were watched. It's way more impressive in real life.

And dolphins!

So many dolphins!

Old Point Loma Lighthouse

Naomi reading the entire history of the lighthouse like she does any time you let her loose in a museum.

Gaslamp Quarter

Sunset Cliffs

Picnic lunch on our last day.

Kayaking the sea caves

Back at the airport where someone forgot to empty her water bottle...

Birthday celebration with friends

Back at all the activities after spring break -- Annika running out for starting lineup

Annika won Player of the Game which comes with getting to carry this guy around until the next game.

Back to the track for a 3200, sometimes going straight from soccer practice

Annika on the big board -- just realized she's in the bottom corner of this pic recovering.

Naomi's spring show is Beauty and the Beast where she plays the Enchanted Rose. These photos were taken at a Brunch of Ballet which is a shortened version of the show served with breakfast.

The completed tutu with its maker, the incredible Shayna!

Naomi with her primary instructors and mentors after the show

The girls' soccer team beat their cross town rival for the first time in years!!

Mya and Annika celebrating the win!
